Terms of service
In force from 10 October 2026.
1. These terms
TimeWitness is operated by Fountech.ai Limited ("we", "us"). Company number: HE 372766. Registered in: Cyprus. Registered office: Evripidou 12A, Agia Zoni, 3031 Limassol, Cyprus.
By creating an account, accepting an invitation, or using the TimeWitness app (the "Service"), you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.
The public site at timewitness.dev, with its verifier page and its feedback page, is open to anybody without an account. By using it you agree to sections 9, 13, and 14, which apply to the site as they do to the app.
The open agent, the receipt format, and the verifier are published separately under their own open-source licence, and that licence governs them rather than these terms. Checking a receipt is free, needs no account, and never needs us.
2. What TimeWitness is
TimeWitness gives a bound on how wrong a machine's clock could be when it stamped something. The bound is the signer's own claim. A receipt also carries whatever signatures were gathered from outside sources, each showing one thing about the time, and none of them vouches for the bound or says when the reading was taken. A receipt says when something happened within that bound. It does not say the exact time.
The app certifies signing keys and records them in a public key log, keeps the receipts an organisation's machines file with it, and offers a hosted check of a receipt.
The thing that was stamped never comes to us. A receipt carries its hash and nothing more of it.
3. What the Service cannot prove
This list is the same one the app shows on its front page, and it is part of these terms. The public site has its own, longer list of what TimeWitness cannot prove, at timewitness.dev/cannot-prove. That list changes as the product does. It is not part of these terms.
- A certificate proves an account certified a key. It does not prove who the legal entity behind the account is, and it does not prove the key was never stolen from the machine it was certified to.
- A certificate is our own statement, in a log we sign. It is never third-party evidence, and it never becomes part of the evidence in a receipt.
- A receipt from a key this app did not certify is not a TimeWitness certificate. Its third-party time evidence still stands, the verifier still prints it, and nobody can say whose key signed it.
- Nothing outside this app is prevented. It enforces no policy and reverses no clock that was rolled back, and what it declines is only its own service, such as a certificate for a key past what a plan carries. It records, and recording is not stopping.
- No page of this app has legal weight, and no regulation we have read requires any of it.
4. Your account
You sign up and sign in with an email address, by an emailed link, a passkey, or GitHub. There are no passwords. An organisation's owners must hold a passkey.
You must be 18 or over to use the Service. If you use it for an organisation, you confirm that you may agree to these terms for that organisation.
Keep your email account and your passkeys secure, because whoever holds them can act as you here. A machine credential is shown once, when it is made. Keeping it secret is your responsibility.
5. Organisations, keys, and the key log
A signing key never leaves the machine that holds it. We receive public keys only.
Key log entries are permanent and public. Deleting an account or an organisation retires its keys by a new entry and removes nothing already published.
6. Fees and cancellation
There is a free tier. Paid plans are charged per organisation per month, at the prices shown on the app's pricing page and at checkout. Any tax is added at checkout.
Nothing is ever priced per receipt or per check, and the free tier gets the same bound as a paid one.
Plans renew monthly until cancelled. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period already paid for. Payments already made are not refunded, except where the law requires it. We tell you about a price change before the renewal it first applies to.
If a payment fails, the organisation is past due while the payment provider retries. If it is still unpaid after 14 days, the organisation has lapsed: it can still sign in, search, and export, and its keys are certified up to the free tier. After a further 90 days it is closed, with two emails before that happens, and the receipts we hold for it are deleted.
Every receipt ever issued still verifies offline in every one of those states, closed included, and every key log entry stays published. A lapse changes what the app does next. It never reaches back into what was already issued.
7. Availability and changes
We are still building the Service, and its features will change. We do not guarantee that it will always be available.
Where we reasonably can, we tell you before we make a change that would lose your data.
8. Your content
The receipts you file and the fields you send with them stay yours. You give us the licence we need to store and process them to run the Service for you, and nothing more.
9. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- break any law, or use the Service to harm anybody;
- upload anything you have no right to share;
- get into, or try to get into, any account or system that is not yours;
- copy, resell, or reverse engineer the app beyond what its own licence allows;
- enrol, or try to certify, a key you do not hold;
- present a TimeWitness receipt or certificate as proving more than section 3 allows;
- probe, overload, or interfere with the Service, the key log, or the hosted check.
10. Services run for us by others
Payments, email, and hosting are run for us by the processors named in the privacy policy.
11. Our rights and yours
The app's software, design, and branding belong to Fountech.ai Limited. The open-source parts are under their own licence.
While these terms are in force, you have a personal, non-transferable right to use the Service under them.
12. Ending things
You can delete your account in the app at any time. That deletes your account and your sign-in links. Any organisation you are the only member of is closed, any plan it pays for is cancelled with the provider at once, its keys are retired by a new key log entry, its machine credentials are revoked, and its invitations and memberships are removed. If others still belong to an organisation you own alone, you must make another member an owner, or remove them, first.
We may suspend or end your access if these terms are broken, if the law requires it, or if we stop offering the Service.
13. No legal weight
Nothing the Service issues has legal weight: not a receipt, a certificate, a key log entry, a verdict, or an export. We do not say that the Service, or anything it issues, meets any rule, regulation, or standard.
A receipt is evidence of a bound, and the bound is the signer's own claim.
14. Warranties and liability
The Service is provided as it is and as available. To the extent the law allows, we give no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of fitness for a particular purpose, that it will meet your needs, or that it will be uninterrupted or free of errors.
To the extent the law allows, Fountech.ai Limited is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service.
To the extent the law allows, our total liability for any claim about the Service is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim and USD 100.
Nothing in these terms limits a liability that the law does not allow to be limited, or takes away a right you have as a consumer that cannot be taken away.
15. Changes to these terms, and the law that governs them
We may update these terms. A material change is posted here with a new date, and flagged in the app or by email at least 14 days before it takes effect.
These terms are governed by the law of Cyprus. If you are a consumer, the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in still applies to you.
